Vintage Design
An extremely rare picture frame from the period of the Jugendstil made of vulcanized fiber or leatheroid.
The back wall inside is lined with silk, the glass pane is firmly set in the frame.
Vulcanized fiber or leatheroid is a bio-composite material known since 1855, cellulose/jute fibers were used as raw material.
Vulcanized fiber was used instead of leather and rubber to make suitcases, belts (smooth, hard, reddish brown, relatively waterproof), among other things.
Vulcanized fiber, together with ebonite, celluloid and the casein plastic galalith, is one of the oldest composite materials. Bakelite was not invented until 1909.
